     Annie Macklow-Smith - Director

Annie brings a diverse and experienced professional history to her role as Director.

After working for a year at The Royal College of Physicians she went on to train as a nurse (RGN) at the John Radcliffe Hopital, Oxford.

She was first introduced to the humanitarian world when she volunteered in the Mother Teresa Homes in India which was followed by projects for a number of different agencies in Romania including “Angels of Romania” and “Scottish European Aid” and for "Brinos" in Nepal.

In between her volunteer work overseas, Annie worked as a Staff Nurse in Endoscopy at the Hammersmith Hospital, in Paediatrics at the the Cromwell Hospital and as a Practice Nurse in a GP surgery in London.

In 1993, Annie played an instrumental role in the formation of UK humanitarian agency Merlin and set up the HR department which she then headed for five years.

During her time with Merlin she was seconded to Goma, Zaire in 1994 during the massive refugee influx - which followed the genocide in Rwanda - to work as a public health nurse for 3 months.

In 1998 she obtained a Distinction in her Certificate in Tropical Community Medicine and Health from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine - building on her Certificate in Tropical Nursing from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine she had obtained a few years before.

In 1998, she joined Medecins Sans Frontieres initially as Assistant Country Director in Sudan and then on the Programme team in their Head Office in Amsterdam. Her last MSF assignment was in Uganda in response to an outbreak of Ebola.

In 2001, she returned to Merlin as Human Resources Director

She counts the Bhuj (India), Bam (Iran) and Pakistan earthquakes and Tsunami as some of the crises that she co-ordinated the deployment of staff to in order to ensure a rapid and effective response.

She left Merlin in 2006

She is an Advanced Life Coach and a Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) Practitioner.

Annie is a Merlin Ambassador and an HR Council of Reference of Hart (Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust).
