Job Background

Our client focuses on health, education, culture, rural development, institution-building and the promotion of economic development. It is dedicated to improving living conditions and opportunities for the poor, without regard to their faith, origin or gender.

They are currently looking for a Director of Education who will provide intellectual and strategic leadership to the Education programme, while also ensuring effective administrative and managerial oversight.

Job Duties

•        Exercise overall responsibility for the management and implementation of an increasing portfolio of education programmes presently being implemented in Afghanistan;
•        Facilitate the design and effective implementation of further innovative strategies that improve teaching and learning outcomes in the programming area;
•        Take a direct lead in interacting with Ministry officials to promote high level strategic planning within the Ministry of Education, particularly the Department of Teacher Education;
•        Work collaboratively with a variety of education partners and stakeholders both informally and in agreed consortia;
•        Ensure a high level of government and donor interest and support for the education programme;
•        Oversee the development of an EMIS across a variety of programmes, ensuring continuous updating and use of data generated by education management information systems;
•        Provide intellectual input into areas of research relating to Afghan education and to studies conducted directly within existing programmes;
•        Lead, manage, motivate and continually enhance the capacity of a diverse team of national and international professionals.

This position is Kabul-based and necessitates frequent travel to the programme areas in which the client operates.

Job Qualifications

Person Specification:

The successful candidate will be an exceptional education development professional, possessing a Masters or preferably a PhD degree in a relevant education field and with 7-10 years of related work experience in education in developing countries preferably in a post conflict context.

S/he will also have proven experience and skills in the following:
•        managing multi faceted programmes to promoted an integrated approach to education development;
•        extensive financial experience to devise and manage large scale budgets;
•        providing critical advice and assistance within the Ministry of Education and Teacher Education Dept.;
•        working with senior national/international education professionals in a variety of contexts;
•        interfacing with wide range of international donor agencies;
•        facilitating policy dialogue amongst other INGO facilitators;
•        and providing overall professional and technical support to large team of education implementers
